Wish List Item #9: Utility sponsor ($5,000 in total)

Wish List Item #10: Outreach Assistance Emergency Fund Sponsor ($5,000 in total)

Additional Notes: 1) Board Member (Member at Large) Description: The Light House Homeless Prevention and Support Center is requesting an AAWGT member volunteer to serve as a Light House Board Member-at-Large. Board members serve two-year terms, and expectations include the following: strategic planning and promotion of the mission of the Light House; participation in annual board retreat and six regular board meetings each year; active participation in at least one board committee; attendance when possible at The Light House, Light House Bistro, and Friends of the Light House events; and assistance with cultivation and solicitation of donors. For an in-depth description of responsibilities, please contact Debbie Jones, Executive Assistant, djones@annapolislighthouse.org.

2) Two Computer Towers with Enough RAM to Allow Staff to Run our Nonprofit Case Management Database Software (Amazon.com link below with a cost of $717.76 per tower) Description: Almost all of the computers used by our clients and staff are second-hand donations, and are either too out of date or do not have the necessary RAM to properly run our nonprofit case management database software, which is critical to being able to effectively diagnose and address the needs of our clients. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B019HQAAUC/ref=psdc_13896597011_t1_B019HQAL88

3) Bus Tokens to Assist our Clients with Transportation Description: Most of our clients rely on public transportation, and we always have a great need for bus tokens. There are many options for purchasing bus tokens, and they can be as small as one trip for $2, a day pass for $4, or you can even purchase annual passes which are $500. You can purchase them yourself or donate funds to The Light House and designate the donation for Bus Tokens. If purchasing them in person please mention that they are for The Light House. For more details about purchasing bus tokens, visit https://www.annapolis.gov/194/ADOT-Transit-Fares.

4) Willow House Improvements ($15,000-20,000 in total) Description: Willow House is one of our permanent supportive housing locations and is in need of renovations in the basement to bring it up to code. Not only does Willow house 5 single women, the basement is also home to The Light House's Career Closet, where clients and residents can make appointments with volunteers to be fit for donated interview and work clothing, further helping them on their path to self-sufficiency. Unfortunately, a recent waterline break caused significant damage and flooding, making usage of the career closet difficult, and putting the structure at risk of safety issues for residents in the very near future. The cost of bringing the structural, electrical, lighting issues up to code would be in the range of $15,000 - $20,000, and The Light House is seeking full or partial funding to assist.

5) Desktop Computers Not Older than 3 Years with Current Software Update Packages for Instructional Computer Lab Description: As previously mentioned, almost all Light House computers for resident and staff use are received second-hand. The on-sight instructional computer lab is vital to teaching coursework such as soft skills, financial literacy, adult literacy and GED training, among other foundational coursework to preventing homelessness. Unfortunately, the computers in our lab our outdated, and incapable of operated basic programming such as Microsoft Office, to train our residents. We are looking for gently used desktops, not older than three years, to better instruct residents and provide experience with current technology.

6) Sponsor a Resident or Client's Medical Needs Description: Many of our clients and residents come to us with immediate and critical medical needs, that often come with costly prescription medicines in order to stabilize their lives. We are looking for donors to sponsor a resident/client's medical appointments or emergency psychiatric evaluations and medications for the period of time until we are able to sign them up for a healthcare plan or Medicaid. Psychiatric evaluations can range from $800-$1,200 and medical appointments/medications can range from $500-$800.

7) 5 Laptops for Case Management Description: Part of the fight against the cycle of homelessness is being able to meet the clients where they are in addressing their risks. Having laptops for our case managers would allow greater mobility in reaching clients across a greater expanse of our county, to better provide services and record information properly during these meetings. New or gently used laptops are requested.

8) 7 Tablets, iPads or Chromebooks Description: A huge component of understanding the need in our county of those who are homeless or at risk of homelessness is understanding exactly who we are serving, when, and for what issues, in order to ascertain a larger trend analysis. As such, we have recently implemented a data management system, focused on case management and outreach, so we can be increasingly more effective in our work. We are looking for the donation of new or gently used tablets, iPads, or Chromebooks for volunteers to use and track client and community members' use of the Day Center (our outreach support program), fresh market, bag lunches, career closet and many more programs The Light House offers.

9) Utility Sponsor ($5,000 in total) Description: As part of The Light House's homeless prevention efforts, we aim to assist our community clients in removing financial barriers. One way we do this is by subsidizing water and utility bill costs for those at risk of eviction. Community clients receiving services can apply for consideration of this subsidy with the assistance of their case manager, and if chosen, the client must present evidence of their portion of the payment, and attend financial literacy and other self-sufficiency coursework at The Light House as a means of preventing a debt reoccurrence. We currently serve 60-70 clients annually in this capacity. We are looking for interested persons to assist in this effort as Utility Sponsors, by donating toward the $5,000 assistance fund, or in full.

10) Outreach Assistance Emergency Fund Sponsor ($5,000 in total) Description: The Light House Day Center is our community outreach service, addressing an array of client issues to prevent homelessness or continue to support their journey to self-sufficiency. The Light House is aiming to raise a total of $5,000 for the Outreach Assistance Emergency Fund, which would help remove barriers to employment by subsidizing or covering costs of items most of us are fortunate to take for granted, such as costs for procuring a driver's license from the MVA, exam costs for employment certifications such as real estate licenses, emergency assistance for day care costs in order to attend interviews, etc. We are seeking full or partial contributions to help with this effort.

Additional Notes: Services from the Heart (SFTH) Backpack Buddies Program is an all volunteer organization providing weekly food backpacks to children at risk of going hungry who attend one of three Title 1 schools in Anne Arundel County: Eastport Elementary in Annapolis, Hilltop Elementary in Glen Burnie, and Belle Grove Elementary in Brooklyn Park. Our mission is to address and reduce the impact of poverty on communities by providing food backpacks to children in need and creating volunteer opportunities within the community.

To date, we have provided over 8,300 weekly food backpacks over the past 4 1/2 years. Each week, SFTH Board Members and other community volunteers purchase the food, pack the food backpacks, and then deliver the food to the three schools. Sign-Up Genius (online software tool) is used to coordinate our weekly food packings and deliveries, as well as special events.

For the 2017-2018 school year, we aim to serve 82 children among the three schools. Each week they will receive six healthy meal items, three snacks, two beverages and two pieces of fresh fruit. Additional food is provided during extended school breaks. A typical weekly food backpack contains: a Nutri-Grain bar, oatmeal, cereal, soup, peanut butter, crackers, box of pasta, apple sauce, granola bar, almonds, juice box, organic milk box, and two pieces of fresh fruit.

The weekly backpacks the children receive provide support to food insecure families within Anne Arundel County. In Anne Arundel County, approximately 20,270 children—16.1% of all children living in the County—live in food insecure households (http://www.feedingamerica.org). Our program utilizes two outcome measures: a Satisfaction Survey and Pre/Post Six Item Food Security Surveys. We are grateful for AAWGT's past support of our program and we are appreciative of any assistance your organization can provide with fulfilling our wish list. Thank you for this opportunity! With gratitude, Services from the Heart board members.

STAIR uses a structured, educator-approved curriculum that is updated yearly. We tutor at sites in the communities where students live to address transportation issues.

Tutoring sessions are the core of our program and are conducted throughout the school year. Each student meets with his/her tutor for one hour twice a week. Each session is tailored to the student’s pace and ability. Thank you for all and any help that you can give us in supporting our students.
