Revolution 2.0: The Power of the People is Greater Than the Memoir By in Ghonim The A Memoir

    By Whael Ghonim

The revolutions that swept he Middle East in 2011 surprised and captivated the world.  Brutal regimes that had been in power for decades were overturned by an irrepressible mass of freedom seekers.  Now, one of the figures who emerged during the Egyptian uprising tells the riveting inside story of what happened and shares the keys to unleashing the power of crowds.

Whael Ghonim was a little-known, thiry-yes-old Google executive in the summer of 2010 when he anonymously launched a Facebook page to protest the death of one Egyptian man at the hands of security forces. The page's following expanded quickly and moved from online protests to a non confrontational movement.

The youth of Egypt made revolution. they used social media to schedule a revoution.  The Egyptians went out to more than a million Egyptioans online, and on January 25, 2011, Cairo's Tahrir Square resounded revolution calls for change.  Yet just as the revoultion began in earnest, Ghonim was captured and held for twelve days of brutal interrogation.  After he was released, he gave a tearful speech on national television, and the protests grew more intense.  Four days later, the president of Egypt was gone.

The lessons Ghonim draws will inspire each of us.  He saw the road to Tahrir Square built not by any one person, but by the people.  In Revolution 2.0, we can all be heroes.

    Movie: Girlhood

    Director Liz Garbus

Liz Garbus created this powerful documentary film that tells the story of two teenagers, Shanae and Megan, and their dramatic journeys through the juvenile justice system and back out on to the bleak streets of East Baltimore, Maryland.  With unprecedented access to the system and to the complex interior lives of the protagonists, the film provides shocking insight into the world of young women struggling just to survive teenhood.

The Life You Can Save: How to Do Your Part to End World Poverty by Peter Singer

For the first time in history, eradicating world poverty is within our reach. Yet around the world, a billion people struggle to live each day on less than many of us pay for bottled water.  In the Life You Can Save, Peter Singer uses ethical arguments, illuminating examples, and case studies of charitable giving to show that our current response to world insufficient is not only insufficent but morally indefensible.  The Life You Can Save teaches us to be a part of the solution, helping others as we help ourselves.
